Proper name [Ancient Greek]

IPA: /spar.ɡa.pěː.tʰɛːs/, /spar.ɣaˈpi.θis/, /spar.ɣaˈpi.θis/, /spar.ɡa.pěː.tʰɛːs/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /spar.ɡaˈpi.tʰe̝s/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /spar.ɣaˈpi.θis/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /spar.ɣaˈpi.θis/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /spar.ɣaˈpi.θis/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: From Scythian *Spargapaiθa, from *sparga (“scion, descendant”) (cf. Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬖𐬀 (spar^əγa, “sprout”)) + *paiθa (“adornment, decoration”), from an older *paisah (cf. Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬉𐬯𐬀 (paēsa)). Alternatively, the second element could be *paiθa, from Common Iranian *paiśa (“outlook”). Compare with Σπαργαπίσης (Spargapísēs), from Scythian *Spargapisa where *paiśa changed to *pisa, and with Ἀριαπείθης (Ariapeíthēs), from Scythian *Aryapaiθa.
